Syllabus for Mammals

MAMMALS SYLLABUS

MAMMALS OF MN---Fall 2007
GRADE 10,11,12
TEACHER: JAMES WEIDE

Textbook: Mammals of MN Field Guide

Materials Required: notebook, pen and pencil, colored pencils or markers, clothing that is appropriate for outdoor work.

Course Outcome: The student will gain an understanding of MN mammal characteristics, water ecology, pollution, world biomes, basic outdoor survival skills and other topics appropriate to the study of mammals and ecology.

Tests: Tests will be given after each unit, and will constitute a majority of the grade for this class. Some tests will have a time limit. If a student misses a test, it will have to be made up ASAP. The format of make-up tests may be different than the original for security reasons.

Lab Reports: Lab reports are always due the next day after the lab unless otherwise indicated. Lab reports should be written neatly, including all information and done in the proper format.

Homework: Homework will be assigned and randomly collected, and is always due the next day.

Late Work: Work is considered on time when it is turned in immediately when requested. After this, it is worth 1/2 credit. After two days, it is worth no credit.

Make-up work: Student will be allowed two days for each day of an excused absence to make up work. Students are totally responsible for making arrangements to make up missing work/activities.

Pre-excused absences/school related: Students are required to make up the work the day before the absence.

Mammal Movies: A lot of information in mammals comes from viewing videos. It is required that all videos be viewed by the student to meet the requirements of this class. If you miss a video, it must be viewed before or after school.

Outdoor Projects/Labs: Going outside and working is a privilege that can be taken away. You must read and sign the safety contract and adhere to those guidelines. Use common sense and always be safe!!! You will lose points and possibly fail the class if you lose your outdoor privilege.

Grading: The school’s grading scale will be used. However, be aware that work is placed into these weighted categories:
Tests/Quizzes…….60% of your grade
Labs/Projects…….30% of your grade
Homework……….10% of your grade

Enjoy the class and watch out for bears!

Mr. Weide reserves the right to make changes to this syllabus when appropriate.
Mammals of MN/Environmental Science is a semester long class. Feel free to see Mr. Weide before or after school if you have questions. Turn in a hand drawn picture of a bear for 10pts extra credit at anytime during the semester, but don't tell anyone else. Limit 1 bear.
